If you have hired a contractor to build a house on a new property or if you are planning on having an addition added to your existing home, then it is wise to contact a surveyor to conduct a survey of the property. This will allow you and your contractors to better understand the boundaries of your property. There are several things you can do to make sure that the survey goes as smoothly as possible. A few of these things are explained in this article.

Find all of Your Paperwork

When you initially purchased your property or your home, you were probably given a variety of papers. These documents include a map of your property. This map will indicate the dimensions of the land you own and where structures sit in relation to the dimensions. Your paperwork will include a parcel identification number as well. If you do not have this number, then locate your latest property tax bill and find it. Look for your deed as well and give all of these papers to your land surveyor. If a previous survey has been completed, then this information will be helpful too.

Once the surveyor has all the information, then he or she will contact your local town so that additional information can gathered. Surveys conducted by your neighbors will be located. Deeds will also be found that detail the dimensions of your neighbors' properties. You do not need to gather this information on your own, because your surveyor will know how to conduct proper research to find what he or she needs.

Locate Property Markers

Concrete Markers

Your property likely has markers at each corner of your property. These markers are secured in place when the property is first established. If you own an old property, then concrete markers may be secured in the earth. These types of markers are easy to find, so search for them on the edges of your land. If you find these types of markers, then make sure to trim the grass and weeds around them so they can easily be found. Also, consider adding tape to the markers.  

Purchase some trail marking tape at your local sporting goods store. This tape is made out of plastic and it is commonly used to mark hunting trails. Cut off three or four feet of tape from the roll and tie it to the top of each marker.

Metal Markers

If your property is new, then metal markers will likely be secured in the ground to mark the edges of your property. You do not need to dig into the ground to find these markers, so use a metal detector instead to find them.  

In most cases, the markers are secured a little over 14 feet from the edge of the road at the front of your property. Use your metal detector to find these metal markers as well as the ones at the back of your property. Locate four sticks or buy four metal posts and tie trail ribbon to them. Secure the stakes in the ground.
